Fifth Grade is an important year of growth and preparing for Middle School. Students are challenged to dig deeper into their studies and take responsibility for their own learning.
Bible – We highlight and study a different Biblical character trait each month. We also focus on how to apply Biblical principles to everyday situations.
Grammar – Using Shurley English, 5th grade takes parts of speech a few steps further and incorporates this knowledge into our writing.
Spelling – We use ACSI Spelling to learn twenty words each week which follow pattern rules.
Writing – We continue writing in various genres such as expository, narrative and research papers. We follow guidelines from the Institute in Excellence for Writing and correlate all writing to our history and reading curriculum.
Reading – In class we dissect the literary, vocabulary and writing elements of three classic novels. Utilizing Total Language Plus as our source, students gain a firm foundation in literature before moving to middle school.
History – History comes to life in Fifth Grade as we examine our nation’s history through a Biblical perspective. Additionally, we use every opportunity to ‘experience’ history through field trips and special events. In the spring students present a Wax Museum of American History for the community.
Science – We learn about the properties of ecosystems. Each week is filled with experiments and activities.
Math – Using Saxon 7/6 students master fractions, decimals, proportions, area and perimeter, geometric figures and much more. Fifth grade bridges the gap between elementary and middle school years in math as students learn more about how to solve word problems and work methodically.
