Second Grade is a year of seeking God’s truth spiritually and academically through exciting, hands-on learning!
Bible / Character – Students travel back in time to learn the history of God’s people from Genesis to Malachi and how to use their biggest treasure, the Bible, to explore our rich history. A specific character trait is highlighted each month with stories of animals and their place in nature.
Phonics / Reading –While continuing to build upon their phonics foundation, students venture into chapter books and comprehension exercises, using the award-winning children’s books, The Boxcar Children and The Mouse and the Motorcycle.
Handwriting – Cursive is introduced with the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum, a big hit with all the students and a highlight of their year!
Math – Second Grade focuses on the continuing development of math skills and concepts. Addition and subtraction facts are continually solidified through carrying and borrowing, along with multiplication facts which are introduced mid-year.
Science – The kingdom of plants is explored in science from cells to trees with hands-on examples and activities. Some of the students’ favorite activities include cell models made of jello and fruit, measuring the tallest trees, and flower dissections.
Grammar – The use of Shurley English enables students to gain a great understanding of parts of speech through jingle memorization, sentence scrambles and daily classifying of complex sentences. We work to build a foundation of solid sentence and paragraph formation.
Writing – Letter writing, research writings, responses to literature and short book reports are among the list of genres covered throughout the year.
